"Enas has always been a prolific researcher,
eloquent speaker and a master teacher. During
the last two decades, he has been in the forefront
of the fight for the prevention of heart disease
among Indians, worthy of the highest praise
from all of us… His book "How to
Beat the Heart Disease Epidemic among South
Asians" is the new bible for understanding,
managing and preventing heart disease, and
living longer, for Indians. Can anyone of
us afford not to read it. ? … this book
is a must read for all South Asians especially
Indians and it certainly must be displayed
on the living room table in every Indian house,
for ready reference."

Dr. Enas' book titled "How to
Beat the Heart Disease Epidemic Among South
Asians" is an excellent resource book
for all doctors who take care of Asian Indian
patients. He has made many excellent points
on how to treat the various hyperlipidemic
conditions with very specific guidance. This
is probably the first book of this magnitude
with tables and short annotations for quick
reference I have seen for a very serious condition
that affects us out of proportion. The book
highlights treatments of hyperlipidemia in
very specific terms and has given levels of
cholesterol, LDL, HDL and triglycerides for
our community to strive for. His outlined
measures for preventing heart disease and
management strategies will help curtail the
very high rates of deaths due to coronary
artery disease to get the CAD message across
to the lay community. This book has all the
necessary information for the medical and
non-medical community to win the war against
heart disease in our population. The highlighted
messages are also suitable for use at community
fairs and seminars. This book is a must read
for all of us.

There
is little question that, in general, South
Asian men and women are at an especially high
risk of premature coronary heart disease.
This has been recognized for years among overseas
South Asians and is now evident in the South
Asian subcontinent itself. As the Westernization
of habits accelerates, there will soon be
a massive and catastrophic epidemic of heart
attacks in quite young persons in South Asia.
This book is by a world-renowned preventive
cardiology expert who is a passionate crusader
about the need to deal with this ethnic predilection.
It is practical, sound, and complete. If it
were required reading for all South Asians,
countless lives could be improved and saved.

This
is an outstanding and comprehensive guide
filled with critically useful information
related to the heart disease epidemic in South
Asians. As one of the distinguished leaders
in the field, Dr. Enas has filled this 350
page book with the latest diagnostic, technologic
and pharmacologic advances that will be equally
appreciated by health care professionals and
patients alike. The book is extremely readable
and highlighted with many pearls as outlined
by "key points in a nutshell" at
the end of each chapter. It should be required
reading for all who are, or take care of South
Asians.

Dr.
Enas is not only the pioneer, but also one
of the world's top most authority on heart
disease among Asian Indians. In their ground
breaking book, How to Beat The Heart Disease
Epidemic Among South Asians, Drs Enas and
Kannan show the latest research on new and
emerging risk factors for heart disease. These
emerging risk factors may be very important
for people from Pakistan, India, Bangladesh
and Sri Lanka – people who have the
highest rates of heart disease and diabetes
in the world. The book covers the statistical
and scientific logic of heart disease, its
prevention and management in Indians.
In these days of managed care, it is essential
for us to understand our risks for heart disease.
This book gives us the information that can
help our doctors and us to make the right
decisions about our care and treatment. The
information is equally useful and applicable
for Caucasians and people of other ethnicities

I
have seen many Indian and Pakistani Physicians
in their 40s and 50s die of heart attacks
both in USA and in India. We urgently need
awareness among physicians and non-physicians
alike to combat the heart disease epidemic
that devastates so many South Asian families.
Now, there is a book to help us in this important
mission.
The book by Drs Enas and Kannan contains all
the medical information and preventive strategies
fully explained in a simple language. I like
the format, content and the depth of useful
practical information. This book has excellent
in-depth review of the scientific facts and
latest research. I found the KEY POINTS IN
A NUTSHELL – end of the section summary
- very pertinent and useful.
This book will be very useful for all physicians
who treat diabetes and heart disease for any
ethnic group, not just the South Asians. It
explains the primary ,secondary and tertiary
prevention concepts very well.
This book brings out all aspects of the dreaded
disease: need for public awareness, identification,
prevention, management and treatment issues
of cardiovascular disease and heart attacks
in particular.

Dr
Enas has synthesized his enormous knowledge,
expertise, and two decades of research experience,
into a single book. It convinces people, even
the skeptics, about the deeply troubling but
insufficiently discussed problem of the twin
epidemics of heart disease and diabetes among
the Indian population worldwide and why Indians
should be tested and treated differently.
Dr. Enas contributions in transforming Association
of Kerala Medical Graduates (AKMG) from a
fledgling organization to a tour de force
in the early 80s is legendary. The impact
of this book on the nearly 1.5 billion South
Asians, I have no doubt will be 1000 times
greater. This excellent book by an exceptional
individual who focused all his energy on this
topic like a laser, is a must read for all
Indians - both physicians and people without
any medical background.

This
is an excellent resource book for any of us
specifically all the Indian physicians. As
an Instructor of Advanced Cardiac Life Support
in the US for over two decades and in India
for the past 8 years, I wish I had a book
like this, especially for the courses conducted
back in India, to dispel the myths about prevalence
of heart disease amongst us. The title is
very apt and speaks for itself. I highly recommend
this book be in every medical school's library
and on every physician's desk (specifically
primary care physicians and cardiologists),

This
book is filled with authoritative, useful
and practical information for patients and
non-specialist physicians. The simple language,
which is Dr. Enas' trademark, makes it easy
for the layman to comprehend ! For the busy
and lazy reader, the authors have summarized
and tabulated and highlighted the essential
information all over the book! This is a unique
approach, I have not seen often. The book
will be an asset and must for any home library!

Finally,
here is a comprehensive book available for
the physicians as well as the general public
written in simple language but replete with
the latest information about coronary artery
disease among the South Asians. The term South
Asians includes people from the Indian Subcontinent
( Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka and Nepal ) who
are in the midst of an epidemic of premature
coronary artery disease that affects them
rather aggressively. Even though, South Asians
are, in general, less prone to obesity compared
to Americans, there is a condition called
" metabolically obese" meaning that
the same criteria for abdominal obesity in
fact do not apply to this ethnic group. The
threshold for waist circumference for abdominal
obesity ( also associated with visceral obesity-fat
deposition in the abdominal organs )is lower
than in people of European origin. Metabolic
Syndrome and diabetes are common among South
Asians as are some specific lipid abnormalities
including high triglycerides, low HDL and
high LPa. High homocysteine is another contributory
factor. The book's primary author is Dr. Enas
M Enas who is a pioneer cardiologist with
large amount of published reports and studies
to his credit. The book is highly readable,
informative and extremely useful for physicians
and the lay public. There is a large bibliography
at the end of the book for further research
and reading. As a practicing cardiologist
with interest in preventive cardiology and
Lipidology, I highly recommend this book and
applaud Dr. Enas for making it available on
a wide scale.

I
am a Caucasian and was recently diagnosed
as having Type II Diabetes. Yes, this book
has research focus on Asian Indians, but it
is packed with substantial information that
will benefit anyone looking for answers. Answers
your own doctor may not know or doesn't have
time to tell you. The comparison of risk factors
for different ethnic groups was fascinating.
"Genetics loads the gun, but environment
pulls the trigger". This book is well-written,
in a clear non-technical language, that the
average person can understand. It is chock
full of charts, tables and highlighted areas
that summarize key points and useful information.
From start to finish, Heart Disease, Nutrition,
Blood Pressure, Cholesterol, Diabetes and
Medications, this book explains what, why
and how to manage.
